I just wrapped up shooting the most FUN & beautiful small, intimate wedding at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and y’all… I’m still riding this high!!! Even with Trail Ridge Road basically in my backyard here in Colorado, the stars out there blew me away.!! The Milky Way was so bright and clear it felt unreal. And the best part? No crazy hikes required … everything was right there, steps from the cabins!
I’m niching deeper into astro and low-light photography because nights like this remind me why I do what I do. If you’re dreaming of saying “I do” under a blanket of stars with the Grand Canyon as your witness, the North Rim might just be your perfect spot! Here’s why (and a whole bunch of my favorite photos from the day)!
This sweet couple wanted something intimate and meaningful… just them, close family, and the wild beauty of the canyon. They rented cabins right on site for the whole group, which made everything feel effortless and joyful. Wake up to canyon views, walk a few minutes to the rim for golden-hour portraits, exchange vows as the sun dipped, then celebrate into the night under the stars. No stress, no long drives between locations… just pure magic!!!!🌄🌌
The North Rim delivered on every level! Mild temps made it comfortable for everyone (daytime highs in the 70s, nights cool but perfect for layering and stargazing). The light was incredible, that soft golden hour glow on the canyon walls, then the transition into deep blue hour and full-on Milky Way brilliance?!?!!! I loved capturing everything from sweet family group shots at the rim to quiet, romantic close-ups in the trees!
Why the North Rim Wins for Astro & Adventure Elopements
If you follow me, you know I’m all about real adventure without unnecessary hardship. The North Rim checks every box:
• International Dark Sky vibes: The stars here are next-level. Right outside the cabins felt like heaven. We got those dreamy Milky Way portraits with almost zero light pollution interfering.
• Easy access: Short walks to epic viewpoints. No all-day hikes needed unless you want them.
• On-site cabins: Grand Canyon Lodge offers historic Western, Pioneer, and Frontier cabins that sleep couples or larger groups. Perfect for multi-generational parties or just keeping your people close.
• Quieter & more intimate: Fewer crowds than the South Rim, which means more space for genuine moments.
• Season sweet spot: Open mid-May through mid-October with comfortable temps compared to deeper in the canyon.
I’m officially obsessed and ready to shoot more astro weddings here!
My Favorite Low-Light & Astro Tips from This Shoot
Shooting at night in the canyon is technical but so rewarding. I focused on balancing the couple against that insane starry sky… longer exposures (20-30 seconds), steady tripod, and a bit of light painting when needed. The key is planning around the new moon for darkest skies and scouting spots during the day. If you’re a couple dreaming of this, I’ve got the experience to make it stress-free (and stunning)🥳🧜♀️💖
